Speed 101 is a hobby creation of Matt Weaver of Aptos, California, USA
Speed101 is in it's infancy as of 9/2002 (and this is a rushed bio...). Speed101 is slowly accelerating as I grow familiar with tools of websites - FrontPage / DreamWeaver, HTML, JavaScript, Style Sheets, and so forth. I have a great deal of potential content, but little is yet assembled on the pages and linked together. It is largely "unformatted" at this point (no CSS style, etc...), but I'm at least now laying an initial "framework." There's a lot of fuss to do anything with a website.
Speed101 was created shortly after I began racing "speedbikes" again in late 1999/2000. I first raced in college and had the exciting experience of defeating the world hour and top-speed record holding racer in head-to-head competition both years I raced. I never pursued record attempts. Upon resuming racing, I have briefly held several world speed records (notes), and currently hold the official US top speed records for "human power." (no wind, no downhill, etc...). I hold the peculiar "distinction" of having gone faster under my own muscle power than any US citizen (78.02-MPH. No disrespect to any track sprinter, or the awesome talent, discipline and technical refinement of so many various athletes). It is a journey of body, mind, and hands (and perhaps words now too).
Special Thanks - There are many wonderful individuals that have contributed tremendously to this endeavor - time, talents, money, encouragement - Dad, Mom, my brothers, Glenn Garland, Tim Hawkins, Larry Tuttle, 2001 "dream team" {Jim Peterson, Mike Mowett, Rob Hitchcock, Joe Anderson, Don Dillon, Chanda Smith}, Clint Walker, Bo Boudart, Charlie Langenstein, Sam Whittingham, Jeffrey Caswell, Hugh Vidovik, Mark Meuller, Sean Costin, John Tetz, Aric Stewart, John Bigbee, Fred Markham, Cliff Krebs, George Leone, 2000 "dream team" {Gardner Martin, Mac Martin, Macky Martin}, and many others. Because of what they've done, much more good will come.

Trivia: I recently learned something I could have known all along - Mr "Speed" himself (The Hollywood movie, "Speed", that is), otherwise known as actor, Keanu Reeves - debuted his first Leading Role at "My" Aptos High School in the movie "Brotherhood of Justice." I looked on, was even selected as an extra for some "pool scene," but skipped. If I had known I'd be alongside Mr "Speed" and Mr "NEO" (of the movie, Matrix, of course) I would have been there. Also present was Kiefer Sutherland, later engaged to Pretty Woman Julia Roberts. With Kiefer I was selected to "extra" in his "Lost Boys" filmed later that summer near my home, but again I took off for Lake Tahoe instead.... Simple choices and all a bit silly, but unique opportunities don't come everyday. Movies play a big role in our lives.... Appreciate the now - now, not later!

There are many fascinating principles related to the much maligned and overused term "speed" - so hence "Speed 101" after a quick selection of a website name. As an engineer I am well acquainted with many technical aspects of "speed" - both mechanical, electrical, biological, and in a broader sense as well. As I perceive the term "speed" I have much respect for it, though admittedly I often cringe at ways it is used as well as (dis)regarded. The site is/will be a ongoing "work of art" (indeed, creating a website is artwork I've discovered - with technical tools no less, but not so much more than a chisel or a brush). In time, I think it will grow into a fascinating educational adventure as content builds.
This is my first website, and I'm just beginning to feel reasonably enabled with the tools but other obligations supercede. Now I just need to set aside the time to apply all the "styles" to the page I'd like (instead of plain vanilla like this), and import the many photos, links, and body that I have been accruing while figuring out how to work the tools.... I know lots of intricate Java and CSS now, as well as browser-differences nitty-gritty - but none applied here yet....
